IOK on Sociolinguistics

Assalamualaikum. We hope everyone is in a fine condition and always are blessed by Allah swt.

So in this post, we'll be discussing on the Islamization of knowledge on Sociolinguistics. As mentioned in our previous post, our theme for this blog is Sociolinguistics which we have already gave you people a brief definition on Sociolinguistics. Hope you guys still remember. ;) Today, we will try to Islamize the knowledge of Sociolinguistics in the best possible way. InsyaAllah. :)

To begin with, despite all the differences we have in language, we should always stay united as one ummah. This has been mentioned by Allah swt in the Qur'an (49:13)

"O Mankind! Most certainly it is We who have created you from a single being of a male and a female. And it is We who have made you into nations and tribes that you may recognise each other, (not that you may despite each other). Verily, the noblest of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you"

From what we can understand in this verse, Allah swt has created us into different languages and cultures. Although we may be different from one another, we should not fight because it only causes harm. But it is best for us to accept one another and see the beauty in different languages and cultures so that we can learn from one another.

Similarly, in another verse of the Qur'an (30:22), Islam recognises that all human races speak different languages which is in the line with the study of Sociolinguistics.

"And among the Signs is the creation of heavens and the earth, and the variations. In your languages and your colours; verily in that are Signs for those who know"

We should realize that all knowledge comes from Allah swt and He is the One that has created us with different languages and colours. All the knowledge that we learn from Sociolinguistics or even other subjects comes from Allah swt. We should not be ignorant with the signs that Allah have given us. As a matter of fact, we should discover on why Allah swt created us all with different languages and races. Most importantly, there is no superiority on language in Islam. English may be the language that is spoken worldwide. However, we should not put aside other languages but instead try to learn it and discover the beauty of it. InsyaAllah.

Remember the saying of our Prophet Muhammad (saw) during his last sermon? He said that

"All mankind are from Adam and Hawa, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab, also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over a white, except by piety and good action."

What can we understand from this hadith? It means that although we are different from one another, speak different languages, live in different culture, we should never discriminate between one another. We are all the same in the eyes of Allah. What makes us different in the eyes of Allah is our iman and taqwa.

We should all be thankful to be given the chance to learn Sociolinguistics? Why? Because it helps us to learn and discover other societies that may be different from us. We can also see the beauty in other languages. How wonderful. Subhanallah. :)
